What is a medication abortion?

Medication abortion is the use of medications to induce an abortion. This is also called the abortion pill, a medical abortion, or a chemical abortion. In the United States, there are three methods of inducing a medication abortion: mifepristone combined with misoprostol, methotrexate combined with misoprostol, and misoprostol by itself. Mifepristone is also known as RU-486 or Mifeprex®.

The abortion pill regime is not the same as the over-the-counter “Morning After Pill” or Plan B.

The most common medication abortion involves a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol. This early abortion is when the woman is 8 weeks or less. The woman first receives the oral dose of mifepristone at the abortion clinic or medical center. The mifepristone blocks progesterone, which causes the uterine lining to break down.

Within 24-48 hours, a dose of misoprostol is administered either orally or inserted vaginally. This part of the abortion is at home. The misoprostol will cause the contractions and the expulsion of the fetus; this may take a few hours, or a few days.

5-10% of medication abortions fail.
